Conventionally Different poster

Conventionally different

This poster represents British social scientist Paul Willis’s concept of symbolic creativity, which analyzed statistics from the UK General Household Survey and postulates that whilst there had been a huge effort to increase participation at traditional art venues, young people put personal and informal cultural gestures before “official” forms of culture. Willis claims that there is a vibrant symbolic life and an active symbolic creativity in everyday life, activity and expressions. This creativity found within everyday life is represented in the poster by the different occupations and the opportunities for creative expression within them.
